While I’m still on vacation with family, I want to wish all my Canadian friends and readers a happy Canada Day!
Similar to our own Fourth of July, on this holiday, Canadians recognize and celebrate the enactment of the Constitution Act, which united three British colonies into a new country.
Like our Independence Day here in the States, our neighbors to the north commemorate the birth of their country with parades, carnivals, barbecues, festivals, fireworks, concerts, and citizenship ceremonies.
May the weather be terrific, your celebration (whatever that may look like) be enjoyable, and your patriotism remain strong!
In a world that seems to be leaning into authoritarianism and isolationism, I hope your citizens continue to vote in ways that respect and protect the full democracy that you enjoy today.
I wish my fellow Americans had.
A Canadian thanks you so much! As a neighbour who has many American friends, I am thinking of YOU as the Fourth approaches. May the good work of Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Franklin, Paine and so many others be cherished and preserved. The ideals they fought for and the system they created was the envy of the world for a long time. May American democracy rejuvenate and inspire again.
