Poetry is emotion put into measure. The emotion must come by nature, but the measure can be acquired by art. ~Thomas Hardy
Resilience is something we desperately need these days.
Luckily for me, I developed it throughout the painful years of my life. It wasn’t intentional, but it was necessary for survival and a chance to find myself again one day.
Being human means, we often doubt our ability to overcome the hard things in life. Past failures instill fear and doubt that linger long after we lose whatever we are trying to attain. This can prevent us from taking those ‘leaps of faith’ that can sometimes make all the difference.
As someone who dealt with adversity, recovered, and adopted a positive outlook, I want to share this week’s poem (one you’ve probably heard of before):
Invictus
William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the Shade,
And yet, the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
