Excuse me for being so forward, but based on this piece, I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask... are you white? None of the recent events that have unfolded have surprised me. They've been disappointing, yes, but very unsurprising. We've been in the belly of the beast for quite some time now and so there hasn't been much to take for granted. Maybe our status as the most dependable democratic voting block has been. Maybe our position as the one of the most prominent groups in the nation when it comes to social justice and fighting for social change. Maybe the belief that that would always matter and pay off. Which is why we are taking a time out (and it's about damn time too). I guess your reaction to recent events depends on whether or not you're a certain type of person.
Yes, I'm white, and no, none of the recent events have surprised me either.
The only thing I took for granted while watching the events of the last ten years unfold was that our system of checks and balances would eventually work. As a youngster, I foolishly assumed that people were decent at their core. Boy, that was a rude awakening.
After what I considered an amazing Harris-Walz campaign, I was crushed by the unthinkable loss in November and took four months off before starting to even read headlines again.
I'm not sure what you mean by "a certain type of person," but my take-nothing-for-granted theme refers to the fact that one can never safely assume anything, even when it's law.
Right behind you albeit from Australia. Every country is under threat with the rising strength of rightwing factions so we all have to be alert to the danger.
You must do what you can while also caring for your health as Robert Reich so aptly said the other day.
Great post. Complacency has resulted in our lack of civic engagement, not only in the United States, but also in Canada, where I live, and in many European democracies, resulting in poor candidates being elected to high office. Now is the time to re-engage, without delay. We must question, get involved and deal with the best verifiable facts, then support those who have better qualifications. We must be prepared to participate in peaceful protests and volunteer for the causes we believe in. It's sad that seniors who knew the world of the 50s, 60s and 70s are leading the charge instead of enjoying the fruits of their working years. However, if we wait any longer, our democratic systems, our institutions and our hard-won benefits will be too eroded.
The resulting vacuum will invite bigger packs of wolves in.

Take care and breathe deep...
Agreed and thank you!

Good job raising the money for the pups and kitties!
Thank you! I'm proud to be part of an effort to end suffering and homelessness for our local furbabies.
That's great!
